Kookmin Bank Adopts JPMorgan Kinexys for USD Payments $JPM

Kookmin Bank Goes Live on Kinexys Blockchain

South Korea’s largest lender, Kookmin Bank (KB), will launch a cross-border payment service for import and export businesses using JPMorgan’s blockchain platform Kinexys. The service will support US dollar transactions across 10 countries, marking a significant step in the institutional adoption of distributed ledger technology for trade finance.

Kinexys, formerly known as Onyx, is JPMorgan’s blockchain-based wholesale payment network that has been processing billions of dollars in daily transactions. By integrating with Kinexys, KB aims to offer its corporate clients faster settlement and reduced costs compared to traditional correspondent banking channels.

Why Kinexys Reduces Friction in Trade Finance

The typical cross-border payment for import/export firms involves multiple intermediary banks, leading to delays of 1-3 business days and fees that can eat into thin margins. Kinexys uses a permissioned blockchain to settle transactions in near real-time, cutting counterparty risk and operational overhead.

For KB, which handles a large volume of trade finance for South Korean exporters in electronics, automotive, and shipbuilding, the shift could translate to millions of dollars in annual savings. The bank is initially targeting 10 countries, likely including the US, China, and key Southeast Asian markets where Korean conglomerates have supply chains.

Institutional Blockchain Adoption Gathers Pace

JPMorgan’s Kinexys has been gaining traction among major financial institutions seeking to modernize legacy payment rails. The platform processed over $1 trillion in notional value as of early 2026, according to JPMorgan’s disclosures. KB’s entry adds a prominent Asian bank to the network, potentially encouraging other regional lenders to follow.

This move aligns with broader trends in the crypto-asset ecosystem. On July 26, 2026, Plasma unlocked approximately 0.89% of its released supply, while Meteora launched a referral staking program. On July 28, HashKey Platform Token and Morpho signed a strategic partnership in Hong Kong focused on on-chain finance. These events underscore growing institutional interest in blockchain-based financial infrastructure.

What This Means for the Remittance and Trade Corridor

The US dollar remains the dominant currency for international trade, especially for South Korean businesses that invoice in USD for exports to the US and other markets. By using Kinexys, KB can offer USD-denominated payments without relying on US correspondent banks, potentially reducing settlement times from days to minutes.

Rival banks in the region, including Japan’s MUFG and Singapore’s DBS, have also experimented with blockchain payments, but KB’s scale—with total assets exceeding 500 trillion won—could make this deployment a benchmark for the industry. If successful, the service may expand to other currencies and additional countries in 2027.

The development also highlights the growing role of regulated stablecoins and tokenized deposits. While Kinexys uses JPM Coin, a JPMorgan-issued stablecoin, for settlement, the platform is designed to interoperate with other digital assets and central bank digital currencies as they emerge.

Looking Ahead: Key Milestones to Watch

The immediate metric to monitor is the transaction volume routed through Kinexys in the first quarter after launch. If KB processes more than $500 million in cross-border payments via the platform by year-end 2026, it would signal strong client adoption and likely trigger competitor responses. Additionally, any announcement of currency expansion beyond the US dollar—such as adding the euro or yen—would indicate deepening integration. The next major update from JPMorgan’s blockchain division, expected in October 2026 during its investor day, may provide concrete data on revenue generated from Kinexys partnerships.
